Junior and Senior Leaders Drive Mel High’s Varsity Baseball Forward by Hunter Paige

Mel High’s varsity baseball team featured strong leadership this season from upperclassmen who stepped up both on and off the field. Senior Dominic Tamburrino and junior Johnny Hemel played key roles in guiding the team through a competitive schedule. Tamburrino said, “This is my second year on varsity, and I’ve become a leader on the team,” while Hemel added, “This is my second year on varsity, and I’ve gotten more responsibility.” Tamburrino mainly played second base, and Hemel held the shortstop position. Their contributions helped position Mel High for a potential playoff run.

Each player brought years of experience into the season, having started baseball at a young age and developing their skills over time. Tamburrino said, “I’ve been playing baseball since I was 6 years old,” while Hemel shared, “I’ve been playing baseball since I was about 5 years old.” Both credited their fathers as their biggest influences, with Tamburrino explaining, “He coached me when I was younger and has always been there for me,” and Hemel saying his dad “has always supported me.” Their dedication showed in big moments, including Tamburrino’s walk-off single and Hemel’s game-winning double earlier in the season.

Preparation and team culture remained a priority for both players throughout the season. Tamburrino explained, “I listen to music, do some stretching, and take batting practice to get ready,” while Hemel said, “I stay focused, listen to music, and warm up properly.” Both also highlighted their love for the game, with Tamburrino noting, “I love competing and the friendship I have with my teammates,” and Hemel saying, “It’s competitive and I’ve loved it my whole life with my teammates.” They practiced at the school field and trained in the gym to stay ready. Looking ahead, both players aimed to work hard and help lead Mel High to a deep playoff run.
