Students Unite for Change by Ne’Asia Taylor
Students Working Against Tobacco, also known as SWAT, held meetings every other Friday. The club encourages students to take action against the use of tobacco and vaping. The club gave students a platform to raise awareness and positivity throughout the school community. During meetings, members discussed strategies to inform peers about dangers of drugs.
The club’s sponsor, Mr. Michael Soliven, said, “This club encourages students by creating a supporting space and helping them build confidence.” Members participated in activities like beach cleanups and meeting with county officials. SWAT educated students about tobacco’s harmful effects while emphasizing decision making and leadership skills. According to Mr. Soliven, “Peer pressure is definitely a big influence especially since kids have it normalized nowadays.”
This club continued to grow as more and more students joined. With teamwork and decision making, they prove that students are able to use their own voices and make a difference. The club's efforts left a lasting impression on the school. This proved that awareness and leadership can create positive outcomes in the community.
