Why Do Students Have To Take Hope? By Samiyah Evans

Students at Melbourne High took part in HOPE, the Health Opportunities through Physical Education course, during the 2025–2026 school year to improve their overall wellness and develop lifelong healthy habits. The program encouraged students to go beyond traditional gym activities by combining physical training with lessons in nutrition, mental health, and personal goal setting. The hands-on approach drew students into a curriculum designed to strengthen both their bodies and minds.

Under the direction of Ms. Dabroski-Bucannan, the HOPE instructor, participants completed personal wellness goals and worked together in group challenges that promoted teamwork and accountability. Each student tracked progress throughout the semester and gained a deeper understanding of health education. Ms. Dabroski-Bucannan stated, “I believe if students had an open mind to workouts and bookwork they would enjoy it more,” emphasizing the course’s balance between physical activity and academic learning. Her approach motivated students to see health as a long-term commitment rather than a temporary goal.

Students responded positively to the experience, finding motivation in both the physical challenges and the supportive environment. Student Jayda Blanc shared, “HOPE helped me stay motivated and reminded me that taking care of my health is just as important as studying.” Taylor and classmates applied what they learned beyond class, adopting better fitness routines and making more mindful choices about their well-being. By the end of the year, HOPE proved to be more than just a course—it became a foundation for lifelong health awareness and personal growth among Melbourne High students.
