New Band Teacher brings Passion to Music Students by Paige Allen
Andrew Canella, the new band teacher at Melbourne High School brought four years of teaching experience and a strong background in music education. He graduated from Florida State University with a degree in music education and previously taught middle school before stepping into his current position. Inspired by his high school years, Canella knew teaching music was the right path for him.
Canella explained that one of his favorite parts of teaching were seeing the “lightbulb moments” when students began to understand new concepts. He shared that he enjoyed helping students grow and develop their skills both individually and as a group. He described his teaching style as “fast-paced” and ‘conversational” while also making sure to focus on group performance and collaboration.
Although adjusting to a new school came with challenges, Canella said the process had been rewarding. He explained that he valued students who showed appreciation and dedication to learning music. Looking ahead, he expressed excitement about rebuilding and strengthening the program, encouraging students to keep working hard. “It’s a very important process," Canella said, “and I love when kids show how much they appreciate it.”
