Inside Scoop: Newspaper Begins Production
For Kyra Chang, joining the school newspaper four years ago out of curiosity quickly became something much bigger, “I have always loved writing and I enjoyed writing and I enjoyed working on the newspaper when it was still part of the yearbook class. So, when I wanted to be in this class this year.” She had wanted to try something new, not knowing that it would change the way she saw writing and storytelling. Chang also mentions how newspaper can be skill learning. “Over the years journalism has improved my writing, so that has been helpful in all of my classes," said Chang.
As deadlines rolled in, Chang learned more than just how to write an article. She discovered the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and staying calm under pressure, “If there is something going on in school that involves and/or impacts the students or staff, it’s worth writing about.” Working with her peers has taught her how to collaborate, and to value different perspectives which have made her a stronger and better communicator.
Looking back, Chang saw more than just a class, it was an experience that has shaped her both personally and academically. “You learn a lot about communicating with others, and that can be used in any field. For Chang newspaper was a place to grow as a writer, build connections with others, and learn the value of sharing stories that matter. Chang also credits her growth to her teacher, Jamie Reynolds who has guided her throughout time in the class for 4 years. “Mrs. Reynolds because she has made journalism really enjoyable and always helps me when I need it.” Chang stated, by emphasizing how her teacher's encouragement and support, has made the class a memorable and inspiring high school experience.
