Club Spotlight: Red Cross By Cassidy Mammay
The Red Cross club is one of the many clubs that the school has to offer. Ran by Ms. Jennifer Mason, Red Cross is inspired by the Red Cross Organization, which seeks to help others. Some things that the organization does include helping people find shelter, feeding people affected by disasters, and providing a lot of blood to hospitals. The Red Cross club here at Melbourne High School seeks to do the same with members of our community.
Arianna Johnson, a junior in the club mentioned “My favorite part about Red Cross is being able to help others in hardships so that they don’t have to struggle in their everyday lives,” said Johnson. The main thing the club does is help people with their lives. Doing simple things for another person can make their life easier, and that matters. Additionally, helping others can make someone feel good about themself, knowing they did something good. It can make a difference in multiple lives.
Johnson wasn’t in the club from the start, but she was glad she joined. “I joined Red Cross because a lot of my friends were in it and I was intrigued on what it meant to be an IHL advocate,” said Johnson. IHL or International Humanitarian Law, is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. This is one of the main things that the club does. Going off of that, Johnson shared her most memorable moment in the club “The most memorable part was becoming an IHL advocate, going to the course and learning about different things regarding humanitarian laws, all relating to helping others,” said Johnson. Being an IHL advocate is important to Johnson and it is an important part of the club.
Joining Red Cross would be an excellent choice if a student is looking for a new club to join. “In Red Cross, we teach others about humanitarian law, along with participating in various humanitarian events like installing fire alarms,” said Johnson. Red Cross emphasizes the idea of helping others and teaches students how to do that in multiple ways. There are many reasons why a student should join Red Cross, Johnson mentioned “I think someone should join Red Cross so that they can interact with other people that they may no know and so that they can also become an IHL advocate, who can help others by doing CPR or installing fire alarms in people’s homes,” said Johnson. Overall, Red Cross is a club that seeks to help others and teach about humanitarian law. The club is one of many that the school offers and is one that students should consider joining.
