Sport Spotlight: Girls Basketball Tryouts By Alma Molander
As basketball season approached, tryouts at Melbourne High School were held. The 2023-24 junior varsity team captain, Kennedy Morgan, tried out with her eyes set on making Varsity. Morgan began playing after she “quit cheer to try something new”. In last year's season Morgan explained that her favorite part was “leading the team in points the majority of the games”.
Additionally, Harper Rice who was also on the junior varsity team in the 2023-34 season tried out for the team. Rice states that “an accomplishment would be making the team for two years in a row”. Rice has been playing for five years and plays the position of small forward/shooting guard. Before playing for Melbourne High school, both Morgan and Rice played for Hoover Middle School where they came second in the league during the 2022-23 middle school season.
Freshman, Elena Neel, also tried out for Melbourne basketball but for the first time. Neel stated “I have been playing since I was really little but I really got serious about it 2-3 years ago”. Furthermore, Neel explained that she “wanted to try out because I love to play”. Neel said that her greatest accomplishment was “that my two teams I played on both won the championship”. Neel also plays the shooting guard position.
