Chorus Students Audition for Candlelight
By Renna Petrides
Candlelight auditions were hosted on Monday, after school. Some students that were picked for the group auditions include Elle Curtis and Camden Martingano. Leading up to auditions, the students must learn two songs from a bank of fifteen, and they’re told these songs at the start of the year. Once they’ve perfected their songs, the students individually send recordings of them singing to Mrs. Natalie Taylor. From those recordings, she picks the students who are most prepared to be a part of the audition that gets sent to Disney. “The auditions are high energy in an attempt to capture the emotion of the song while also unifying approximately 50 voices,” said Curtis.
Auditions can be stressful, especially when it's with a large group. However, Martingano said, “I think they went very well, we ran through our music multiple times and Mrs. [Natalie] Taylor made us so much better.” In agreeance, Curtis said, “I think the auditions went really well this year. We were expressive and unified.” Even with the pressure of the auditions, the students were proud of how they performed and so was Melbourne High School as a whole.
Although, students are especially motivated to do well in auditions due to the perks that they get from going. Candlelight is held at Epcot at Disney World. After performing at Epcot, students are given two tickets for each day that they sang at Disney World. The tickets are two per student and they are able to use them at any time and with whoever they want to. Even so, Curtis said, “I just love seeing the behind-the-scenes of the performance industry alongside my friends and fellow chorus members. It really is magical.”
