Campus Spotlight: Metal Detectors

by Lucie Frank

Metal detectors have caused many changes around our school. Sophomore, Fey Fitzpatrick, said, “I think the metal detectors are good because they keep the school safe.” Fitzpatrick also informed us that “to get through the metal detectors easier I have to take out my computer, but I don’t mind it doesn’t stop me from bringing it.” Finally, when asked why she thinks they tested the metal detectors with our school first, Fitzpatrick said, “We have a big school so they want to see if it is efficient."

Two other students were asked about their opinion on the metal detectors, sophomores, Makayla Irons and Bentli Saxon. Irons said, “ I neither like nor dislike the metal detectors because I like the idea of our school being safer, but it can be time consuming to go through them.” Saxon said, "I don’t mind the metal detectors, I know they keep me and other students safe, but they are kind of annoying.”

Both Irons and Saxon said they have to take out specific items such as laptops and binders to make getting through the detectors easier and faster. Finally, when asked why they think the metal detectors were tested on our school, Irons said, "I think our school is one of the more popular schools in Brevard so that’s why I would assume we got them first.” Saxon said something very similar,” I think they were tested at our school because we have so many kids.”
